The Problem

What Birds Actually Cost a Food Plant

Four problems come up in almost every food facility we survey. They rarely arrive alone, and they compound quietly until an audit, a customer complaint or a rejected export consignment makes them everyone's problem at once.

Industrial Pigeon Control

Pigeons are the problem bird in Indian food plants, and they are creatures of habit. Once a flock accepts a truss, a cable tray or a silo ledge as home, it will keep returning to that exact spot for years - and it breeds up to six times a year. Scarecrows, reflective tape and one-off netting patches buy a few weeks at most. What actually works is removing every landing surface the flock uses, in one coordinated pass, so there is nowhere left to come back to.

Bird Dropping Control

Droppings are where a bird problem turns into a food safety problem. They carry Salmonella, E. coli, Campylobacter and Histoplasma; once dry, they break into dust that travels through vents, AHU intakes and open shutters straight into product zones. On floors and gantries they cause slips. On roof sheets, gutters and conveyor frames the uric acid eats galvanising and paint until you are replacing steel a decade early. Cleaning it repeatedly is a running cost. Preventing it is a one-time one.

Bird Nest Prevention

A nest is not just twigs. It is dry organic matter sitting inside your building, and it brings its own ecosystem - bird mites, carpet beetles, larder beetles and moths that migrate straight into stored product once the chicks leave. Nests block roof drains and cause monsoon water ingress over stored raw material. They pack into exhaust cowls and extractor housings until motors overheat. Built above an electrical panel or a lighting fixture, they become a genuine fire risk. The only reliable fix is denying the site before nesting season starts.

Bird Contamination Prevention

Birds are a physical, biological and allergenic contaminant in one. A feather in a retail pack triggers a complaint; a feather found during a customer audit triggers a corrective action plan. Export consignments get rejected at destination for far less. And auditors do not need to see a live bird - droppings on a dock canopy, an abandoned nest above a dispatch door or feathers in a roof void are enough to raise a non-conformance against FSSAI Schedule 4, HACCP or BRCGS. Contamination prevention starts at the building envelope, not at the QC bench.

Site Reality

Where Birds Get Into Food Plants

After five decades of surveys, the entry points are depressingly predictable. Nine out of ten plants we walk have at least three of these open on the day we arrive.

Loading bays and dispatch docks

Shutters stay open through the shift. Pigeons follow forklifts in, then roost on the beams above the staging area - directly over palletised finished goods.

Roof voids and truss space

The gap between the false ceiling and the sheet roof is warm, dry, undisturbed and invisible from the floor. It is the single most common nesting site we find in Indian food factories.

Turbo ventilators, louvres and exhaust cowls

Damaged or missing mesh on roof extractors gives direct access into the production hall. Nests inside cowls also choke airflow and burn out motors.

Open sheds, silo tops and effluent areas

Raw material yards, husk sheds, ETP tanks and canteen waste points feed the flock. As long as there is food on site, birds keep returning no matter what you install on the main building.

Cable trays, pipe racks and light fittings

Every horizontal run inside the shed is a perch. Droppings fall from these onto conveyors, hoppers and open packing tables below.

What We Install in Food Facilities

Exclusion first, deterrence second. We seal the building so birds physically cannot get in, deny every perch they were using, and cover the open areas netting cannot reach. Most food plants need two or three of these working together - the survey decides which.

Industrial Bird Netting

The backbone of every food plant programme. High-tensile UV-stabilised HDPE mesh, tensioned on stainless cable, seals roof voids, truss space, truck bays, open sheds and ventilator openings. It is a physical barrier - nothing to fail, nothing for birds to habituate to. Mesh size is chosen for the target species and the net is installed taut and flush so it does not sag into a debris trap. Rated 8 to 10 years outdoors.

Nearly Invisible Bird Netting

Same exclusion, almost no visual footprint. Used where the netting sits in view of customers, auditors or visitors - reception blocks, glazed facades, QC and tasting rooms, retail-facing outlets and factory canopies. Fine-gauge, low-reflectance mesh that reads as empty space from a few metres away while still blocking birds completely. The usual choice when brand-facing areas cannot look industrial.

Bird Spikes

For the linear surfaces netting cannot cover - parapets, window sills, beams, cable trays, pipe runs, signage and light fittings. Blunt-tipped and humane; they deny the landing without injuring the bird or the technician servicing the area. Stainless steel for wash-down zones and coastal plants, UV polycarbonate elsewhere. Fixings are captive and counted, so nothing on a spike run can become a foreign body.

Laser Bird Deterrent

For the large open areas where netting is not practical - raw material yards, silo tops, ETP and effluent zones, rooftops, grain platforms and boundary sheds. An automated unit sweeps a programmed green laser pattern that birds read as an approaching physical object and vacate. Silent, chemical-free, effective at dawn and dusk when bird pressure peaks, and it runs unattended once commissioned.

A low-profile track that delivers a harmless static pulse the moment a bird lands. It teaches the flock to abandon the location rather than simply blocking it - which is why it works on the stubborn heritage roosts where spikes get built over. Nearly invisible from ground level, so it suits ledges on visible elevations, curved surfaces and heritage or architectural facades where spikes would look wrong.

How We Work

From First Walk to Audit Record

Bird proofing a live food plant is as much about sequencing as it is about materials. This is the order we follow, and skipping a step is usually why a previous contractor's work failed.

Site survey and bird pressure mapping

We walk the plant at the hours birds are actually active, identify the species, count roosting and nesting sites, and mark every entry point on your layout drawing. You get the map whether or not you appoint us.

Zone-wise solution design

Each zone gets the method that suits it - exclusion where we can seal, deterrence where we cannot. We specify mesh, fixings and hardware against the wash-down regime and the corrosion load of your site, not from a generic catalogue.

Clearance and decontamination

Nests, eggs, droppings and contaminated insulation are removed under controlled conditions by technicians in PPE, and surfaces are disinfected. We never seal a building with birds still inside it.

Installation around your production plan

Work is scheduled zone by zone during shutdowns, weekly maintenance days or night shifts. Areas below are sheeted off, tools are tethered and counted in and out, and the zone is handed back cleaned.

Documentation and handover

You receive marked-up drawings, material specifications, warranties and dated before-and-after photographs - the evidence pack your auditor will ask for.

AMC, inspection and trend reporting

Periodic inspections check net tension, perimeter fixings and new pressure points, with reports that show bird activity trending down over time. That trend is what turns a one-off installation into a defensible programme.

Bird Control in Food Plants - Common Questions

Every major food safety standard - FSSAI Schedule 4, HACCP, ISO 22000, BRCGS and AIB - treats birds as a pest that must be excluded from production and storage areas. Birds are a physical, biological and allergenic contaminant at once: feathers and nesting debris fall into open product, droppings carry Salmonella, E. coli and Campylobacter, and nests bring in mites and beetles.

Worth knowing: an auditor does not need to see a bird inside the plant to raise a non-conformance. Droppings on a loading dock canopy, or an old nest above a dispatch door, is enough.

In most plants, yes. We schedule work zone by zone - usually during shutdown windows, weekly maintenance days or the night shift - and sheet off the area below so no dust or fixings reach the line. High-risk zones such as filling halls and packing rooms are handled during planned cleaning breaks.

As a rough benchmark, a 20,000 sq ft roof void is typically netted in three to five working days without touching output.

There is no single best method - it depends on the zone.

  • Exclusion first: bird netting seals roof voids, truck bays and open sheds so birds physically cannot get in.
  • Then perch denial: ledges, beams, trays and signage get spikes or shock track.
  • Then open areas: yards, silo tops and effluent zones where netting is impractical are covered by automated laser deterrents.

A working programme almost always combines two or three of these. Anyone who recommends one product for the whole plant without surveying it has not looked at your building.

Yes. We do not use poisons, adhesives, gels or trapping. Every method we install is non-lethal and non-toxic - netting excludes, spikes and shock track deny perching, lasers move birds on. Nothing we install can leach, drip or shed into product.

All fixings are captive and either stainless or food-grade coated, and each installed component is logged so it can be counted during a foreign-body investigation.

We clear before we seal. Nests, eggs, droppings and contaminated insulation are removed under controlled conditions by technicians in PPE, the surface is disinfected, and only then does exclusion go up.

Sealing a building with birds still inside is the most common mistake we get called in to correct. It traps the problem, and a few weeks later you have a carcass and a beetle infestation instead of a bird.

Every site gets a survey report with marked-up drawings, a bird pressure map, the installation scope with materials and warranties, and dated service records with before-and-after photographs.

Clients on our AMC also receive periodic inspection reports and trend data - which is usually what auditors are really checking: whether bird activity is being monitored, not just cleaned up after.

Our UV-stabilised HDPE netting is rated for 8 to 10 years outdoors, and longer inside covered roof voids where it is out of the sun.

What actually decides its life, though, is the perimeter - cable, turnbuckles and anchors. Where we install stainless hardware and inspect it annually, plants routinely get a decade of service. Cheap nets fail at the edge, not in the middle.
